WELCOME!
Corrective Reading is an intensive reading program intended as a reading intervention class. This class is appropriate for students in high school who have some decoding problems, who do not read at an adequate rate, or who have mastered many basic reading skills, but who have trouble with typical textbook material and comprehension.
Course Objectives:
This 3-trimester class is designed to change the behavior of the problem reader. Lessons in this class are created to give students practice that leads them to become stronger in what is easier for them to do and that gives them progressive practice in more difficult reading endeavors. The lessons do this while remaining within the skill limits of the student, which means that an appropriately placed student will not be overwhelmed with difficult tasks or bored by tasks that are too easy, all the while including the Common Core Standards.
Classes are small, assuring that students will receive individual attention to expedite their success. Students will receive practice in oral reading, word-attack skills, individual reading, group reading, group work, Plato aimed at individual student’s level, and workbook exercises. Mastery tests assess new skills. Students will be monitored closely for improvement, and will receive direct intervention from their teacher. The class is based on cumulative skill development, and strategies are taught with numerous examples. The difficulty of material will increase gradually but steadily.
Parent involvement with the student, teacher, and curriculum is imperative to the student’s success.
Our goal is to increase your student’s reading level so that they continue in high school with confidence.
Materials Required: pencil, eraser, colored pens (black, blue), 1 spiral notebook (college ruled, 100 pages), highlighters of various colors, binder to keep all finished work, and Internet access (see technology heading).
Expectations
1. Treat yourself, your peers, and your teacher with respect. Everyone in this classroom is an important, valuable person.
2. Be in the room and in your assigned seat when the bell rings.
3. Be prepared for class with all the required materials.
4. Respect the rights and property of others. Everyone has the right to an education, and if you infringe upon that right you will be removed from class.
5. Use class time appropriately.
Much of the most profound learning happens in the setting of the classroom. If you are not here for the entire period you are missing valuable experiences.
· Being present for the entire period
· Being punctual (in your seat and ready for class when the bell rings)
· Being prepared with all required materials for class
· Being a productive member of the class
· Being respectful
Some Understandings
· All electronic devices are to be out of sight and turned off during class unless instructor has given approval. Please refer to the Student Handbook for NEW guidelines on electronic devices.
· Take care of personal business before or after class. I expect you to manage your time wisely.
· Water in a clear bottle is the only acceptable drink permitted during class.
**Please see the student handbook for the tardy and absence policy. This policy will be strictly enforced.
Grade Calculation
There are many assignments that will consist of your final grade.
Grade percentages will be posted and updated by the 2nd week of school.
****These calculation weights may change based on the specialty of this class****
I look forward to our time together!
